| Bronx-Lebanon Health Care System: A Tradition of Community
Service |

| For more than 100 years, Bronx-Lebanon
Hospital Center has been most successful
in providing quality health care to those in need,
regardless of their ability to pay. It would be
impossible to retell the countless acts of selfless
and extraordinary service that generations of
hospital employees have demonstrated. Still, the
events that make up Bronx-Lebanon's rewarding
history reveal a profound story: one of a hospital
founded on an unwavering commitment to meet the
needs of its community. |
In 1962, the Lebanon Hospital (incorporated
in 1890) merged with the Bronx Hospital (incorporated
in 1909). Just nine years later, the hospital
took a significant step towards training the doctors
of tomorrow, by becoming an affiliated primary
teaching hospital of the Albert Einstein College
of Medicine. An important event that signaled
a new era was the completion of "New Directions"
in June, 1987.
This $214 million modernization
project resulted in the replacement of an aging
physical plant, with state-of-the-art facilities, as well as the creation
of a specialized and innovative nursing facility.
In addition to New Directions, numerous other
major initiatives were launched by the hospital's
leadership, including education, housing, nutrition,
and medical outreach programs, which further integrated
Bronx-Lebanon into the fabric of the community. |
Bronx-Lebanon's
tradition of service and its leadership position
as an economic anchor, engine for positive change,
and beacon of hope have continued into this new
millennium.
Today, Bronx-Lebanon is the largest
voluntary, not-for-profit health care system serving
the South and Central Bronx, with 965 beds at
two major hospital divisions; two specialized long term care facilities, and an extensive BronxCare Network. In 2006, BronxCare provided nearly 1 million outpatient visits, the third largest for a hospital in New York City, further reinforcing Bronx-Lebanon's essential role as Doctor to the Community. |
Bronx-Lebanon's two hospital divisions and network outpatient practices are fully accredited by the Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations, receiving its full three year accreditation in April, 2005. The hospital
also has 14 accredited residency and fellowship
programs. It is in the Bronx community where we
see the importance of fulfilling the hospital's
mission of open arms, to heal, to teach, to care.
Bronx-Lebanon regularly provides free check-ups
and screenings at schools, shelters, nursing homes,
senior citizen centers, churches, and many other
community organizations.
Numerous outreach programs
have also been initiated to educate the community
about important health issues, including HealthBeat,
Bronx-Lebanon's widely acclaimed weekly
live television show, which offers viewers the
opportunity to have their questions answered by
medical experts. An innovative 51-unit Low Income Housing project for senior
citizens, located near Bronx-Lebanon, was also
recently completed. |
| In the financial area,
Bronx-Lebanon has maintained a strong bottom line
position, especially significant in the current
economic environment. Bronx-Lebanon is also among
the largest employers (with 4,000 employees) in
the South and Central Bronx. |
| Ultimately,
a hospital must be judged by its accomplishments
and record of community service. Throughout Bronx-Lebanon's
history, there have been many changes and challenges.
Yet, all of our efforts are based on a firm dedication
to what matters most, the quality medical care
that we have successfully provided to those in
need; that is Bronx-Lebanon's community
service tradition. |
