Orthopaedics: Doing What it Takes to Keep the Community Moving
Dr. Ira H. Kirschenbaum, Chairman, Orthopaedics.

Bronx-Lebanon’s Department of Orthopaedic Surgery, under the leadership of Dr. Ira H. Kirschenbaum, is providing a wide range of general and sub-specialty clinical services, including hip and knee reconstructive surgery, surgery of the hand and upper extremity, sports medicine, foot surgery, complex pediatric orthopaedic disorders, spine surgery, and orthopaedic trauma.

Its new and expanded faculty are fellowship trained in advanced procedures with the ability to cover all the needs of the patients in the ER, as well as through the hospital’s inpatient and outpatient areas.

The department is also involved in an “aggressive program aimed at developing a true musculoskeletal Center of Excellence that will be unparalled in the Bronx, and on par with similar centers across the country,” stated Dr. Kirschenbaum.

Joint replacement services have been expanded, and a comprehensive program for the treatment of arthritis disorders is also now in place.

The recent addition of Dr. Sepideh Baghian, from the University of Pennsylvania and the University of Massachusetts, is a critical piece in the development of a full-service hand and upper extremity program.

Simultaneously, the department is moving towards developing a major foot surgery program and lower extremity wound service, directed by Dr. Neal Blitz, a nationally recognized expert in surgery of the foot and an-kle (who has joined Bronx-Lebanon, from California).

In connection with the ER, the department has implemented the “Game Day Same Day” program. From high school students and college athletes to “weekend warriors,” it provides comprehensive and immediate care for sports injuries.

The “Game Day Same Day” program, most importantly, guarantees that if you get hurt on game day, a sports medicine physician will care for your injury that same day.

“This program represents a perfect example of the unique collaboration that the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery has with the ER and the other specialty areas of the hospital,” stated Dr. Kirschenbaum.
