Cosgrove, Chairman, Surgery. The Department of Surgery, under the leadership of Dr. John Cosgrove, is continually moving forward and achieving successful outcomes for their patients. Their overriding goal is surgical excellence. “Our surgical team is second to none, and we take pride in the advanced procedures our surgeons use in addressing many challenging situations,” stated Dr. Cosgrove. Bronx-Lebanon offers a full range of general and subspecialty surgical services, including gastrointestinal, thoracic, trauma/ emergency surgery, and critical care. Minimally invasive procedures are increasing to serve the needs of the community. Advanced laparoscopic surgeries are also now utilized. Additionally, plastic surgeons provide cosmetic and reconstructive surgery, while vascular surgery specialists offer both a non-invasive testing laboratory and minimally invasive techniques, including endovascular procedures for patients with aortic and peripheral vascular disease. In the Urology area (an integral part of the Department of Surgery), services were expanded to include advanced surgical approaches to kidney diseases. Urologists also provide treatment for erectile dysfunction, as well as surgery, when necessary, for urinary incontinence and prostate cancer. “The laparoscopic and minimally invasive procedures we utilize for our patients, including those with renal and urological problems, are translating into less time spent in the hospital and a speedier recovery,” stated Dr. Joseph Silletti, Chief, Urology. Bronx-Lebanon’s surgeons are also responding to difficult challenges by performing cutting edge operative procedures for cerebral, circulatory, and gastrointestinal problems, as well as colon cancer, among numerous other conditions. For children and adolescents, the Pediatric Surgery Division uses sophisticated technology to provide the highest level of care. Surgeries range from emergency appendectomies in adolescents, to complex intestinal operations in newborns. Most procedures are done laparoscopically. Bronx-Lebanon’s neonatologists, pediatricians, and pediatric anesthesiologists provide the appropriate consultation and follow up. In emergency situations, the Department of Surgery works closely with the ER staff to provide 24/7 coverage. Patients requiring surgery are brought to the Operating Room for necessary intervention. There, the OR nurses and staff provide surgeons with necessary support. The OR team works in newly modernized operating and recovery rooms. It is noteworthy that the OR maintains among the lowest surgical site infection rates in New York State, a tribute to the high quality care provided. Dr. John M.
