Orthopedics: Fixing the Hurt

The Division of Orthopedics, under the direction of Dr. Ira Kirschenbaum, has
significantly expanded the scope of its clinical and surgical services. With the anticipated
addition of more orthopedic physicians and support staff, the division is meeting the
needs of a growing community.

Among the division’s surgical specialty areas are total hip and knee arthroplasty, joint
reconstruction surgery, sports medicine and arthroscopy, pediatric orthopedics, and
fracture management. Patients receive the highest quality orthopedic care, through the
use of advanced surgical procedures and medical treatments, including non-operative
management of arthritis, disc disease, and repetitive over-use syndromes.

As a result, physical and functional recoveries, from acute musculoskeletal injuries to chronic
musculoskeletal conditions, have been successful. The division also works in conjunction
with Physical Therapy and Pain Management specialists, as well as utilizes Bronx-
Lebanon’s advanced Radiology services.

Orthopedics patient, Fatima Guerrero turned to Bronx-Lebanon’s orthopedic team in the hopes of regaining her functional capabilities. She had experienced major difficulties in
lifting her arms, carrying basic items, and using both shoulders. Even washing her clothes became quite challenging.

In 2002, the orthopedic team performed surgery on Ms. Guerrero’s right shoulder. Two years later, she decided to have similar surgery performed on her left shoulder. This procedure involved arthroscopically shaving the cartilage tear, trimming the bone spurs, and re-attaching the rotator cuff tendon to the bone, using bio- absorbable suture anchors.

Orthopedic physicians, throughout the nation, including those at Bronx Lebanon, are utilizing arthroscopic techniques and achieving optimal results. Ms. Guerrero’s operation was a success, with the quality of her life significantly improved.

As the division strives to expand, the orthopedics team is consistently directing its efforts towards educating the community. Radio and newspaper advertising are part of an overall “fixing the hurt” campaign targeting injury prevention and rehabilitation.
